A better way to handle being nervous

Last week, I was on TV

It was SO COOL. And I was also WILDLY UNCOMFORTABLE.

I just kept walking around telling everyone how nervous I was. They would laugh and tell me not to be nervous.

They were being nice. But also, being told not to be nervous DID NOT make me less nervous.

The good news is: I actually didn't need to be less nervous.

All I needed to do was to remember why I was there: I have important information that can help burnt out womxn everywhere learn how to crush it at work without work crushing them.

While my nervousness was big, my reason for being there and going on TV in the first place was bigger.

That's the thing about nervousness and the particular kind of discomfort we feel when we go after something we really want that's also a little bit (or maybe even a lot) outside of our comfort zone.

We feel uncomfortable precisely because we want whatever it is we're doing to go well and we also aren't quite sure it will.

Whether it's a job interview or a presentation or some kind of professional development, we're going to bump into some discomfort.

Because that's what happens when you push past your current limits.

And everything that we want in life (that we don't already have) is beyond our current limits.

The key to pushing past that growth edge is in being able to handle the discomfort without getting derailed by it. And one way of doing that is reminding yourself why you're doing what you're doing.

When you're just experiencing the nervousness and discomfort itself, it can feel kind of excruciating. But when you shift your attention back to WHY you're doing what you're doing, everything changes.

And pro tip: word your why in the positive. Instead of telling yourself what you're NOT doing or why you're NOT doing it, focus on what you ARE doing and why you ARE doing it.

When you remember why you're doing whatever hard thing you're doing, it's like you get an extra battery pack. Your capacity to show up and keep going just increases. It's not magic. It's the power of perspective, and it works.

I am completely, one-million percent willing to feel some personal discomfort in order to share my message with the world (that's you).

What have you been trying to accomplish? How can you tap into your why to get the extra oomph you need to get it done?

And if you want to get there faster, coaching is the way to go. Getting expert attention every week will help you stay on track, overcome obstacles, and hit the finish line in record time. Let's get it done. Click here to get the conversation started.
